9 DIVISION OF THE GARMENTS
When crucifixion came to Srebrenica, there was a holocaust. The men and boys were separated from the women and babies. Families were divided. The women were shipped by lorry to Tuzla, and many of them were ambushed on the journey. The men and the boys were herded on to the airstrip. After one week there were no more reports of them. The world now knows that up to 8.000 people were killed on that airstrip while the attention of the western press focused on the next safe haven to be threatened.
Is it just poetic imagery to suggest that the shapes we see, maybe in weathered sandstone, so resemble carved figures and faces that the natural world itself seems to be responding with horror to the desolation of those hours?
Perhaps the worst atrocity that can ever be perpetrated is the forcible separation of loved ones, who like the seamless robe of Jesus. are designed to be a unity.
'Yea, dogs are all around me; a company of evil-doers encircle me; they have pierced my hands and my feet, so that I can count all my bones. They have divided my clothing among them, and for my raiment they have cast lots.'
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, also his tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom, so they said to one another, 'let us cast lots for it, to see whose it shall be'
